It presents a simple formula for estimating total case depth, and illustrates the influence of carburizing temperature, duration of carburizing, quenching temperature, and quenching medium with the aid of typical hardness gradients. A thermo-mechanical finite element (FE) model has been developed to model the carburisation and quenching process in order to predict the inhomogeneous martensitic transformation, the case-hardened layer as well as the associated volumetric expansions, therefore enabling the prediction of the final strain distribution and the resultant stress distribution.

For carburizing temperature at °C, surface hardness values of carburized specimens were between HV and HV for oil as quenching medium, HV and HV for water as quenching medium and HV and HV for airFile Size: 1MB. Carburising is a thermochemical process in which carbon is diffused into the surface of low carbon steels to increase the carbon content to sufficient levels so that the surface will respond to heat treatment and produce a hard, wear-resistant layer.

Three techniques are described. Carburizing steels for case hardening usually have base-carbon contents of approximately %, with the carbon content of the carburized layer generally being controlled at between and 1% C (Ref 2). However, surface carbon is often limited to % (Ref 3) because too high a carbon content can result in retained austenite.

Usually this is steel with C content within the range of 0,1- 0,25%; sometimes, however, steel with higher content of carbon, even up to 0,4% is subject to carburizing.
